My current research project is a book about the history of the canned fruit industry in Northern California. The industry has a dynamic history woven into the development into the region, formation of local and state government, development of the national food industry, America’s international expansion, and the nation’s military history. It is not just a business history, it is the history of California and the business of feeding America.
Food scholars, like myself, consistently say that we can learn much about ourselves by what we eat, and this study shows how what American’s eat and how we produce food has changed and adapted to the resources, advantages, and challenges of the times and places in which we live.
I hope the next step of this research project will be the transnational impact of the Northern California fruit canning industry.
